Flowers are held high on an erect stalk and face forward. Usually maroon (sometimes white) lanceolate petals, not very wide, little or no recurve and tapered at the bases and not greatly larger than the green sepals, yellow anthers with dark ovary. A more northern species but ranges southward in the Appalachians. Blooms April-May.
